Thozamile Taki told the court that he had been severely assaulted by police before he drew up a list of 13 people the state accuses him of killing.
He said the police had given him a list of names and forced him to rewrite them on another piece of paper.
Taki is accused of killing 13 women and dumping their bodies in sugar cane plantations in Umzinto, KwaZulu-Natal, and tea plantations in Port St Johns, Eastern Cape.
Taki was arrested in September 2007. He also faces 13 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
His girlfriend, Hlengiwe Nene, was charged as an accessory to the 13 robberies.
The trial began on July 30, and 68 of the state's 103 witnesses have testified so far. - Sapa
