Police launch manhunt on 10 awaiting trial prisoners

POLICE issued a warning to locals not to catch any of the 10 awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the Sawoti police station on KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast at the weekend.

"We have launched a manhunt for the prisoners who escaped on Friday night.

"Members of the public order unit and the dog unit are searching for them," said Captain Vincent Pandarum yesterday.

He said the prisoners had overpowered two police officials and tied them in the cells. A state firearm was stolen during the escape.

"We appeal to the community not to catch them because one person is armed."

The men are facing charges of house breaking, theft, robbery and assault.

They were dressed in civilian clothes. Pandarum said an internal investigation is under way into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
