A NEW soccer tournament has been unveiled as part of the 2010 Fifa World Cup awareness campaign for inmates at the Kutamasinthumule Correctional Service Centre in Makhado.
The Limpopo provincial government is organising the tournament, a World Cup legacy project, on Friday at the prison's sports grounds. The four-team tournament is the brainchild of inmate Stambo Mokoatedi and is sponsored by the provincial department of sports, arts and culture.
Tournament coordinator Molelemane Segoale, a former referee, said the tournament will feature a team from the department and three from the prison.
"We believe that offenders have the right to benefit from the 2010 project, as the project is about everybody, and further, that inmates can be easily rehabilitated through sport activities," Segoale told Sowetan yesterday.
"It is also our belief that through this event the prisoners will recognise that they are still valued by their government.
"The Kutamasinthumule Fifa 2010 World Cup Legacy Project will not be a once-off event because there will be capacity-building programmes to ensure that inmates get accredited training certificates in refereeing, coaching and sports administration. This will give them life after prison."
Faranani will play Sanibonani at 8am, Tsakane will play the department's team at 10am and the final will take place at 2pm.
