A 36-YEAR-OLD metered taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly shooting two taxi owners in Pietermaritzburg during a fight over a passenger.
Taxi owners John Dladla, 58, and George Mncwabe, 63, were killed.
Police spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan said the police received a report about a shooting at the Masukwane taxi rank in Church Street, in the Maritzburg CBD.
"On arrival at the scene the police found the bodies of two men with multiple gunshot wounds.
"Investigations on the scene established that there had been an altercation between the deceased and a metered taxi driver who had arrived there to pich up a female passenger," Jeevan said.
Jeevan said the passenger had boarded the metered taxi when Dladla and Mncwabe allegedly pulled her out of the vehicle. This resulted in analtercation.
"The metered taxi driver was blamed for taking their passengers," Jeevan said
"Both the deceased taxi owners are alleged to have returned to their vehicles to arm themselves with a steel pipe and cane knife.
"It is further alleged thatthey attacked the metered taxi driver, who produced a gun and fired at them, fatally wounding both.
The driver then fled the scene and later turned himself in to police inRichmond.
He was subsequently arrested and detained and is due to make a court appearance soon.
Meanwhile, police have launched a massive manhunt for the killers of a woman who was found dead andpossibly raped on Sunday night.
Jeevan said the semi-naked body was found in a stream in the Mpophomeni area, outside Howick.
"She had multiple stab wounds to the chest and her throat had been slit.
"The victim was found by a passerby, who contacted the police," Jeevan said.
"The possibility that the deceased was raped before being killed elsewhere and thereafter dumped in the stream cannot be ruled out.
"We are making an appeal to anyone with information that will assist in theinvestigations to contact Station Commissioner, Captain Mpumelelo Makhathini, at Mpophomeni police station on 033-238-0078 or on 082-418- 2048," Jeevan said.
