A FURIOUS husband apparently tried to take his own life shortly after he allegedly stabbed his wife several times with a knife, thinking he had left her for dead.
The man is now fighting for his life at Lebowakgomo Hospital after he allegedly deliberately crashed his car into a tree on Sunday.
Lebowakgomo police spokesperson Inspector Manong Tshehla said the man had visited his wife, a qualified nurse at St Ritas Hospital in Nebo.
The couple reportedly had a domestic quarrel before the incident.
The man, who works as a male nurse, allegedly took out a knife, stabbed his wife several times and left her for dead.
Thinking she had died, he then fled the scene and drove his Toyota Tazz at speed towards Polokwane.
Somewhere along the Lebowakgomo road he apparently decided to commit suicide by driving his car at high speed towards a tree on the roadside.
He broke both his legs in the crash and is in a serious condition.
"Because of the manner in which the accident happened, we believe he could have been driving at a speed of around 180km per hour," Tshehla said.
He advised any couples experiencing relationship problems to seek assistance from professionals entrusted with the responsibility of assisting people in crisis.
The authorities at St Ritas Hospital yesterday described the woman's condition as stable.
