Health and wealth go hand in hand

YOU might wonder what "wellness" has to do with financial and personal wealth and success, but the answer is simple: financial wellbeing and personal health go hand in hand.

YOU might wonder what "wellness" has to do with financial and personal wealth and success, but the answer is simple: financial wellbeing and personal health go hand in hand.

The World Health Organisation defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Eating, exercising and sleeping well all play a key role in the prevention of infections and disease. But a good sense of self, a loving support network and the potential for continued personal growth are also important to overall wellbeing.

Healthcare is much more than just having medical aid. The new way of thinking is that a healthy mind and body equals quality of life. If we look at the schedules of successful business people we are often amazed at how they manage to include exercise in their daily routines.

Yet it is often the benefits gained from exercise that give them the stamina and ability to cope with their hectic schedules.

With all the changes in diet and medical technology, individuals are living much longer. Among the essentials for retirees is to have the best possible medical plan and healthcare they can afford since it is often in retirement that you need the most medical attention.

The problem is that affordability is becoming more difficult and this is one of the reasons why provision for medical care in retirement should be highlighted when undertaking financial planning.

Sustainable health and wellness is not only part of our survival but also a continuously rewarding way to live our lives.

The government's initiative to implement national health insurance is long overdue. But there are big questions that still need to be addressed. The medical aid industry and government need to find solutions. While this is happening, individuals need to take better care of themselves and to embark on wellness programmes and not rely on the system to treat their problems.
