Five die as 'stock theft' van crashes

FIVE people died and three others were seriously injured when a bakkie carrying two suspected stolen cows collided head-on with a car in Blinkpan, Mpumalanga.

The accident took place on the Blinkpan-Carolina road on Saturday afternoon.

A policeman who was escorting the bakkie that was being driven to the police station with the suspected stolen stock, is fighting for his life in a local hospital.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane told Sowetan that police received a tip-off about "a blue bakkie that was transporting stolen stock".

"The police managed to track down the bakkie but the driver could not explain his load. A policeman tried to drive the bakkie to the local police station but it had technical problems that were only known to the suspect.

"So he was allowed to drive the vehicle under escort of a police member while the police van followed from behind," said Khoabane.

He said while police and the suspect were travelling to the station, the driver of the bakkie suddenly overtook two trucks and collided with an oncoming car.

Four passengers in the car and the driver of the bakkie were killed instantly.

"Two people from the sedan and the policeman who was escorting the driver of the bakkie were seriously injured. Our member is one of the injured people fighting for their lives in hospital," said Khoabane.

He said police "would thoroughly investigate the deaths and alleged stock theft".
