But Sandton residents were conspicuously absent from the roughly 15000 to 20000 participants.
The few who came in contact with the parade - mostly motorists - did not seem impressed. A few were seen pulling faces at metro police managing the streets.
If the Gauteng provincial government was hoping to develop interest in the carnival by taking it from the inner city to the wealthy Sandton the idea backfired.
The carnival was inaccessible to township and inner-city residents and simply did not attract Sandton residents.
Dawn Robertson, head of the Gauteng department of arts and culture, explained that this year's carnival was held in Sandton because of the BRT roadworks.
The parade started at George Lee Park and snaked its way to Free Innes Park, where more choreographic skills were displayed by carnival clubs from throughout Gauteng.
The City of Tshwane was the major winner and walked away R30000 in prize money.
Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mtimkulu, MEC for arts and culture, said: " We have established the Gauteng carnival commission, which we hope will soon take over the running of next year's carnival."
