Tyatyeka tipped to relieve Malinga of lightweight title

THE combination of boxing promoters Gavin Hope and Reggie Hilman, and national junior lightweight champion Patrick Malinga, seems to strike the right chord with fans in Lenasia.

THE combination of boxing promoters Gavin Hope and Reggie Hilman, and national junior lightweight champion Patrick Malinga, seems to strike the right chord with fans in Lenasia.

It started in May when Hope and Hilman presented Malinga at Finetown Multi-Purpose Centre, south of Lenasia. About 2000 fans, including schoolchildren, went into raptures and Malinga reciprocated with a second-round knockout against Mzolisi Yoyo.

Two months later Malinga, from Ekurhuleni, was back but at Nirvana Secondary School in Lenasia where the "Hammer" flattened Maliki Kinyogoli, also in two rounds.

That fight was also presented by Hope and Hilman, who will stage Malinga's second defence tonight against Vus'Umuzi Tyatyeka from Western Cape. Tyatyeka, the 2007 Baby Champs titlist, is the number one contender. The general feeling is that the title might change hands.

Meanwhile, Boitshepo Mandawe and Welcome Ntshingila will fight for the vacant Gauteng welterweight title. This fight promises blood, sweat and tears and Ntshingila is tipped to triumph.

Another fierce fight is expected between Loyiso Ngantweni and Funisani Monta in the junior flyweight division over six rounds. They were due to fight for the Gauteng provincial title but that plan has been postponed until November 6.

Hope said admission is R30 and the action will kick off at 7.30pm. The Malinga-Tyatyeka fight will be televised live on Blow by Blow at 10pm.

l The Gauteng Promoters' Association has called boxing stakeholders to a meeting at Nasrec Auditorium on Sunday at 10am. High on the agenda will be the Boxing Act.
