A 26-YEAR-OLD newspaper distributor allegedly committed suicide in a police cell in Vereeniging.
Police said Goodwill Jobo - arrested for rape - was found hanging in the cell he was locked in on Wednesday morning, but his family believes he was murdered.
"He was arrested on Tuesday and we took him some food in the afternoon. When we went to see him the next day, we were told that he was dead.
"Police told us that he had hanged himself using a blanket. They did not allow us into the cell. We did not see him and we suspect that they are trying to hide something," said Jobo's father, Paseka.
"How could he hang himself with a blanket? There were other people in the cell. How could he have killed himself in front of them?" asked Jobo senior.
"We have been to the mortuary and the (piece of) blanket was still on his neck. He was still wearing clothes so I couldn't see if he had injuries on his body or not," Jobo said.
But police spokesperson Inspector Happy Nape said there was no foul play.
