Thumbs up for World Cup

TOP Australian sports chief Bob Elphinston has come out in full support of South Africa, predicting that the country will put on a great show during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

TOP Australian sports chief Bob Elphinston has come out in full support of South Africa, predicting that the country will put on a great show during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Elphinston was the general manager of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in Australia, where he was in charge of all the sporting codes.

The influential Elphinston is currently president of the International Basketball Federation. He was in the country for the week-long Basketball Without Borders development project.

"It is very good for South Africa and the entire continent that the World Cup is finally coming here for the first time in its history," Elphinston said.

"There is no shred of doubt that a successful 2010 World Cup will put Africa in a good position to host other major sporting codes like the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.

"South Africa has done very well in terms of the preparations for 2010. The local people will definitely benefit from the tournament in terms of the legacy projects. The benefits will not be only for the six weeks that South Africa will be hosting the World Cup, they will be for the next 50 years or so."
