Safa drive to boost 2010 vibe

SAFA Soweto has decided to use all its competitions between now and next year to build awareness of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

SAFA Soweto has decided to use all its competitions between now and next year to build awareness of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

This is in response to a concern by Local Organising Committee chairperson Irvin Khoza that the 2010 World Cup vibe is lacking in this country.

Phil Mogodi, chief executive of Safa Soweto, said: "We have decided to use all our tournaments between now and next year to create awareness of the World Cup. That would include us educating Soweto residents about the importance of hosting such a big tournament, which will pump in millions of rands into our country's economy.

"We all know that more than 500000 tourists will be coming to our country specifically for the World Cup, many of whom have started making enquiries about Soweto.

"Soweto may not be hosting a single match, but it's already on the lips of many people who have approached travel and tourism companies for the visit to South Africa next year."

Safa Soweto tournaments include the Solomon "Stix" Morewa Cup, the Zodwa Khoza Memorial Cup, the Putco Under-15 Cup and the Discovery Walter Sisulu Cup.
