Ministry defends bling cars

THE Ministry of Communications has lashed out at Cosatu for saying Minister Siphiwe Nyanda should trade in his bling cars for cheaper models.

Nyanda leads the bling brigade, having bought two new BMW 750i vehicles at a total cost of over R2,4million.

The DA complained that Nyanda's vehicles were fitted with extras like rear seat entertainment and leather sports steering wheels.

Nyanda's spokesperson, Tiyani Rikhotso, yesterday said it was absurd to suggest that Nyanda should return the "tools with which he is supposed to deliver on his mandate".

He accused Cosatu of joining the DA "on distracting this new administration from delivering on its commitments to the electorate". Rikhotso described Cosatu's statement that the ministers were only abiding by an "apartheid-era handbook" as "reckless and unfortunate as the ministerial handbook was approved in 2007".
