Hawks swoop on state scam

NINE people have been arrested in the Free State for corruption in the public works department.

NINE people have been arrested in the Free State for corruption in the public works department.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) spokesperson Musa Zondi yesterday said: "Ten other cases of corrupt activities have also been opened.

"It appears that the alleged scam involved leasing buildings to ghost renters and then claiming money for the lease from public works. The department is charged with housing all state departments."

He said the anomalies were picked up during the August 2008 internal audit which revealed that the department had lost about R4million over four years.

"Two of those arrested are members of the police."

During the arrests police seized a BMW valued at R100000, five cellphones and five laptops. - Sapa
