TO MARK the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, the German Cultural Institute in Johannesburg is to dismantle its security wall, erected in response to the city's high crime rates.
As part of a project called Cracking Walls, the Goethe Institut will on November 9 begin tearing down the wall and replacing it with new security measures.
The institute's director, Katharina von Ruckteschell-Katte, said dismantling the wall would allow the organisation to better fulfil its mandate of cultural outreach and exchange.
Instead of trying to keep people out, the institute wanted to draw more people in by opening up the building to passersby, the director said. - Sapa-DPA
