The clashes erupted on Monday in Mogadishu's MakaMukarama area, near a base used by African peacekeepers, sparking exchanges of gun and mortar fire.
"Rebels who are known for provoking violent incidents attacked positions. We defeated them but a number of civilians died in the crossfire," Abdirasak Qeylow, a spokesperson man for the Somali government told reporters.
