That is why about 40 Living Legends born in KwaZulu-Natal will be honoured.
The second Living Legends Awards ceremony, organised by the eThekwini municipality, will be held tomorrow at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre.
Respected people who have made a huge contribution to the upliftment of the country and who will be honoured by the city include poet and writer Gcina Mhlophe, Soul Brothers lead singer David Masondo and top athlete Willie Mtolo.
An exhibition detailing the contributions made by the Living Legends, will also be hosted by the KwaMuhle Museum.
The exhibition will be open to the public from September 10 until the end of May next year.
"We are giving community members the recognition they deserve in their fields. The Living Legends Awards seeks to honour legends while they are still alive," said Mlungisi Ngubane, director of the Local History Museum.
The community has responded positively and has been active in nominating the legends and their names will be made available to the public soon.
Legends were nominated for the following categories: music, sports, arts and drama, politics and social responsibility.
