Traffic cop held on bribe charge

A LIMPOPO traffic officer whose vehicle was allegedly used to commit crime in Giyani has been detained by police while trying to bribe them with cash at the weekend.

A LIMPOPO traffic officer whose vehicle was allegedly used to commit crime in Giyani has been detained by police while trying to bribe them with cash at the weekend.

This was after the officer told police that she had lent her vehicle to another suspect who is still at large.

The other suspect allegedly went on to commit a series of criminal acts in Giyani, using the vehicle.

The suspect is a taxi owner and he robbed a bakkie owner of R500. He is also being investigated on several cases of a similar nature.

Crime spree

He also allegedly threatened to shoot motorists who picked up hitch hikers in the area, insisting that people board his taxis instead.

Police spokesperson Inspector Magezi Thomas Makhubele said the traffic officer allegedly lent her vehicle to the suspect unaware that she might put herself in trouble.

The suspect then went on a crime spree, robbing people in the area and used the vehicle to escape.

Makhubele said the traffic officer was summoned to the police station for questioning after police had found the car registration numbers from the victims.

She was arrested after she tried to bribe police officers with R800 which was allegedly placed inside a plastic bag.

She was then detained and was charged with bribery and defeating the ends of justice.

The traffic officer is expected to appear before the Giyani magistrate's court on charges of bribery and defeating the ends of justice this week.
