Perhaps the Lions' 13-20 defeat to the resurgent Cheetahs in an important clash in Bloemfontein at the weekend was Coetzee's last hope of making it to the top four.
"I don't ponder if we can secure a semifinals berth at this stage. However, we will work hard and from now onwards we will take each game as it comes," Coetzee said yesterday.
Otherwise the Doornfontein outfit will have to rely on other teams to do them a favour in their remaining five games.
"We will use the remaining games to build strong combinations and also to prepare for the upcoming Vodacom Super 14 campaign next season," Coetzee said.
Remaining in sixth spot with a paltry 21 points from nine games, the Lions are three points adrift of the fifth-placed Cheetahs.
Out of the remaining five games, the Lions could perhaps garner victories over minnows the Leopards and tail-enders Boland.
With their inconsistent form, only miracles could see the Lions upsetting the top three, the Sharks, Western Province and Griquas.
