PO strike now illegal

THE Johannesburg Labour Court has declared the ongoing strike at the Post Office illegal.

THE Johannesburg Labour Court has declared the ongoing strike at the Post Office illegal.

This comes after some workers, especially in Gauteng, refused to go back to work after an agreement between the union and the employer was reached two weeks ago.

Workers in defied the Communications Workers Union (CWU) and continued with the strike saying there was a "misunderstanding".

Workers had embarked on strike over "apartheid-style" salary structures. The parties then agreed on a seven percent increment for all CWU members at the bargaining unit.

Workers earning the highest salary in a given job rate would receive a five percent pensionable increment and two percent as a lump sum. Gauteng CWU secretary Moeketse Lepheane told workers outside Witspos in Ormonde, Joburg, that general secretary Gallant Roberts and deputy president Mathapelo Mphuti had been removed from the negotiating team. Sapo had asked the court to declare the strike illegal, and to prohibit violence and obstruction. - Getrude Makhafola
