Addressing the ANC eThekwini regional general council in Durban Motlanthe, who was one of the party's National Working Committee members deployed to various parts of KwaZulu-Natal to conduct an assessment on service delivery, advised delegates, especially councillors, to be responsible leaders.
Act correctly
He said it was important for ANC members to behave in a manner that would not jeopardise the image of the organisation. "Once you become a member of the ANC, you can no longer act as a free agent. Whatever you do or say will reflect on the organisation," he said.
He said it was important for ANC members not to act in a manner that would create a bad image for the party.
"Don't act negatively because people would actually take that as how the ANC behaves. People often form perceptions on what you do or say. Be conscious of how you carry out your responsibilities as an ANC member.
"We need to act correctly and accordingly all the time," he said.
Motlanthe said it was important for leaders, especially councillors, to take criticism in a "comradely manner".
