TSHWANE mayor Gwen Ramokgopa has dismissed claims that the municipality might be put under administration because of its financial crisis.

Ramokgopa told a press briefing in Pretoria yesterday that she was personally assured by Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shiceka that there were no talks of putting the municipality under an administration.

"We are under pressure but not to that extent. We are not in a financial crisis to an extent that we cannot operate. We are doing something about this, and we should actually be commended because our consumer debt is the least compared to other metropolitan municipalities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, Ekurhuleni and eThekwini," she said.

Ramokgopa said they had taken measures to tighten belts and assured the public that undertaken programmes were not under threat.

"The challenge (of cash flow) emanates from accounts from the previous financial year. In July we collected about R1billion and our expenditure was about R1,4 billion."

The mayor took a swipe at the media and said negativity towards her administration was of extreme concern.

"If there is something positive it goes to the latter pages, but if it is negative it goes to the front pages, especially if it is a matter raised by the opposition. That is why some of you are still pursuing the issue of the municipality being put under administration, which I believe is far-fetched," she said.
