Zuma's rule could create a police state

I AGREE with Unisa's Professor Anthony Minnaar that the section of Article 49 of the Criminal Procedure Act should not be amended because police have the power to use force if they or bystanders are in danger. Already in 2008-2009, police have shot 490 people in self-defence.

Why is the ANC suddenly a midwife of our human rights policing? President Jacob Zuma has said there will be no more nice police officers because he knows that "re-militarisation of the police force" would make him popular.

Is this administration not creating a police state where police and intelligence operatives can do as they please ?

Are we not creating a police state such as those in Zimbabwe and Chile?

In the battle for the ANC, intelligence operatives Muziwendoda Kunene and Billy Masetlha were involved. To defend the rule of law, intelligence officers ensured that Zuma did not go to court.

The police force is not clean either. They are involved in corruption, taxi feuds, drug trafficking and robberies.

The Hawks will be cleansed of good, honest operatives who served the Scorpions.

I am concerned that constitutionalists in the ANC, Cope, the IFP, ID and DA are silent while Zuma is creating a police state.

To fight crime, we must infiltrate syndicates, arrest and disband hit squads in the taxi industry and drug-infested communities. We must ensure a gun-free society by confiscating guns and guarding our boarders. Deal with drug trafficking so that youth do not do crime.

The Independent Complaints Directorate must investigate and expose police brutality .
