Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
LIMPOPO MEC for health and social development Miriam Segabutla is concerned about the deteriorating status of health facilities and the massive social development challenges facing the province.
She said this at a media briefing in Polokwane on Tuesday.
"To get a clear understanding of the challenges facing my department I visited several health facilities and participated in a number of district imbizos and makgotla in my first 100 days.
"I have also interacted with patients, health workers, support staff and members of the community about challenges facing our health and social sectors. There is an inadequate and inappropriate supply of medication at our health facilities. People still travel long distances to access healthcare.
"More worrying is that patients have to wait in long queues before they are attended to. We have also heard of cases in which health workers had a bad attitude towards patients.
"The situation is further worsened by the lack of health professionals," Segabutla said.
She said funds had been embezzled because of unauthorised and wasteful expenditure owing to poor internal controls.
She said the department was facing an infrastructure backlog because Limpopo ws hampered by old equipment and facilities.
"We are revitalising our province's facilities and procurement processes."
