Gauteng wrestlers to fly SA flag in Denmark

SOUTH Africa will be represented by four amateur wrestlers - all from Gauteng - at the World Senior Championships in Herning, Denmark, from September 22 to 27.

SOUTH Africa will be represented by four amateur wrestlers - all from Gauteng - at the World Senior Championships in Herning, Denmark, from September 22 to 27.

They are Heinrich Barnes (Gauteng North, 66kg division), Richard Addinall (Gauteng East, 74kg), Gerald Meyer (Gauteng North, 84kg) and Etienne van Huyssteen (Gauteng North, 96kg).

Barnes, Meyer and Van Huyssteen are all from Tukkies, while Addinall is a product of the Boksburg Wrestling Club.

Barnes and Addinall have represented South Africa previously at these championships, but Meyer and Van Huyssteen will be making their debuts. Both have represented South Africa at the World Junior Championships.

Of the four Barnes is the only one with Olympic Games experience. He is regarded by many as the country's finest wrestler.

Barnes, from Pretoria, studied at the Idaho North College in the US before switching to Oregon State University. He was recently placed eighth at the American University Championships.

SA Amateur Wrestling Federation spokesperson Marga Odendaal said a lot is expected from the talented quartet.

"We know that winning a medal or two is not going to be easy, but neither is it impossible," she said.

Nico Coetzee, chairperson of the SA Coaching Board, will act as their coach. - Sapa
