KWAZULU-NATAL'S capital, Pietermaritzburg, is experiencing an increasing number of violent attacks by mentally disturbed people.
This comes after a man, alleged to be mentally disturbed, was assaulted by an irate mob after he went on the rampage and harassed members of the public.
Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the police received a report of an assault in the vicinity of Berg and East streets.
"On arrival police found an adult male, about 30 years, who had been seriously assaulted.
"Police investigations at the scene established that the victim, believed to be mentally disturbed, had been harassing members of the public in the vicinity of Berg and East streets when he was assaulted, allegedly by members of the public.
"The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been admitted," Budhram said.
He said a case of assault was registered for further investigation and no arrests had been made.
This is the third incident involving a mentally disturbed person in 'Maritzburg, Budhram said.
On Monday a 55-year-old woman was stabbed by a man suspected to be mentally disturbed.
A forth night ago, pregnant Nompumelelo Ndlovu was bludgeoned to death by a man also alleged to be mentally disturbed.
