TALENTED TEENAGER IDENTIFIED

PORT Elizabeth teenager Kaylin Swart has been accepted at the University of Pretoria's High Performance Centre.

PORT Elizabeth teenager Kaylin Swart has been accepted at the University of Pretoria's High Performance Centre.

Discovered during a Shona Khona regional camp at the Wolfson Stadium in Kwazakhele in 2008, Swart was identified and recommended to the centre by Joseph "Skeshekheshe" Mkhonza, formerly of Kaizer Chiefs/

Mkhonza was impressed when he saw 15-year-old Kaylin, who plays goalkeeper, holding her own.

"We were practising shooting during the camp and she really stood out, saving most of the shots. She also positioned herself very well, which makes her game technically sound," Mkhonza said.

Kaylin forms part of the national Under-17 squad. Depending on her progress at the centre (HPC), she could soon be making her first appearance at the senior women's national team.

Dettol Shona Khona is spearheaded by Dettol and Reckitt Benckiser. Bidvest Wits University Football Club is the programme's host.

Sowetan is the media partner and has made Dettol Shona Khona a part of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation's youth and community development programmes portfolio.

A thousand schools from rural and under-developed communities across the country will be selected to participate in Shona Khona. The schools are required to collect Dettol soap wrappers and the first 200 schools to reach the target will qualify for life skills and soccer coaching and training camps throughout the country. Twelve recruits will go to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Stan Whiting, Shona Khona's project coordinator, said: "By taking the camps to the schools Shona Khona will reach more children and the most talented ones will have the best coaching opportunities in Brazil."
