Learning from the Confed Cup

THE North West provincial government will host a summit today in Rustenburg to discuss lessons learnt from the Confederations Cup in June.

THE North West provincial government will host a summit today in Rustenburg to discuss lessons learnt from the Confederations Cup in June.

Kennedy Mosiapoa, the provincial 2010 World Cup coordinator, said the aim was to start working on their final preparations for next year's big soccer fiesta.

"We have invited various government departments at provincial and national level like those of tourism, transport, sports, safety and security," he said.

"The Local Organising Committee will also be joining us. We are doing an all-inclusive post-mortem of the Confederations Cup with the aim of hosting the greatest World Cup.

"We know that there were some challenges around park-and-ride facilities, especially in the opening matches of the Confederations Cup.

"There is also the issue of food sold at the stadiums in line with Fifa requirements.

"We are aiming to provide affordable food for our people.

"Our provincial transport programme around the World Cup must be approved by national government to ease traffic congestion (on routes to) Royal Bafokeng Stadium."

Mosiapoa said they will also come up with plans to intensify awareness of the 2010 World Cup throughout the province.

"We fully agree that the branding and visibility of the 2010 World Cup must improve now. People must see that the World Cup is coming to North West.

"Dr Irvin Khoza (chairperson of the Local Organising Committee) has raised some concerns about the non-existence of a vibe around the tournament - we are already working on that one.

"We will also do an audit of the hotel rooms in and around Rustenburg."
