The Lions coach Hans Coetzee believes their 20-13 victory over the Blue Bulls will bolster their chances of contesting in the semifinals of the Absa Currie Cup.

An excited Coetzee yesterday extolled his boys for playing 90 minutes as if their lives depended on the game.

The Doornfonetin side had lost two games to both the Sharks and Western Province towards the closing stage of the first round.

The hosts defended well, turned over well enough ball from the breakdowns and used their ball possession effectively.

The Lions led a 10-0 in the first half following a try from Alwvyn Hollenbach and Herkie Kruger's conversion and a penalty.

Scorers: Lions: Hollenbach and Vermaak (tries), Kruger (two conversions) and two penalties.

The Bulls: Jaco Pretorius (try), Burton Francis (conversions), Penalties: Francis and Francois Brummer

Other results: Leopards 50, Boland 16; Cheetahs 58, Griquas 13, Western Province 21, Sharks 9.
