A 66-YEAR-OLDmining businessman has appeared in the Welkom regional court on charges of tax fraud involving R20million.

South African Revenue Service spokesperson Malerato Sekha said yesterday that Jan Marthinus Stevens was released on R10000 bail. The court took into account that he was a pensioner and had a fixed place of residence.

Stevens was arrested on Wednesday for suspected income tax and VAT contraventions relating to the company Stevens Specialised Mining after the specialised tax unit of the National Prosecutions Authority issued a warrant of arrest.

The case was then handed over to the unit in Bloemfontein for prosecution and was postponed to October 27. - Sapa
