Safa Soweto creates 2010 Cup vibe

SAFA Soweto has heeded the call by Local Organising Committee chairperson Irvin Khoza to create a vibe around the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

It plans to use the Clinix Stix Morewa Soccer Challenge to mobilise the community around the quadrennial soccer spectacle.

"We fully agree with Dr Khoza that there is no vibe around the World Cup," said Phil "Chippa" Mogodi, Safa Soweto boss, yesterday. "You don't have to look any further - here in Soweto there are no World Cup posters.

"Our people don't even know much about the tournament.

"Safa Soweto is going to use this tournament held in honour of Bra Stix (Morewa) to spread the gospel about the 2010 Fifa World Cup. The campaign will include educating the residents of Soweto about the World Cup. Subsequent to this one, we are going to use all our tournaments to create awareness."

Mogodi said they were happy that professional soccer was back in Soweto after the rebuilding of Orlando Stadium and upgrades to Dobsonville Stadium.

"It's good that big-time soccer is back in Soweto, our children are thrilled to see clubs like Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows in their own backyard."

As in the World Cup, Mogodi said 32 clubs will take part in this tournament, which starts on Sunday. Guest speaker Screamer Tshabalala, the Safa junior national teams head, commended Dr Khamane "Kop" Matseke's company for its support of Safa Soweto.
