YVONNE Mbatha, the wife of alleged crime mastermind William "Mashobane" Mbatha, had to get a lift back home after the couple's luxury German 4x4 was confiscated by cops at a court yesterday.
She had driven to the court in Germiston, where Mbatha appeared for a bail application.
About 700 people arrived at court in luxury buses and minibus taxis yesterday in a show of support for Mbatha, otherwise known as "The King of Bling".
As the crowd marched past a large contingent of heavily armed police officers, the group chanted: Monna yo ha ana molato (This man is innocent).
The couple's red 4.8 IS BMW X5 was impounded by the police after it was found to be using a licence disc that had expired on March 31 2007.
Sowetan understands that the police took the car for tests to determine its legal status.
The car was being driven by Mbatha's wife, Yvonne, when the police pounced.
Magistrate Isabel Mlaba postponed Mbatha's case to next week Thursday. This was to allow his newly appointed advocate time to prepare.
Meanwhile, the group supporting Mbatha brandished placards proclaiming his innocence and demanding his release.
The group's organiser and Mbatha's childhood friend, known only as Thlaki, said the convicted criminal was being targeted because of his "progress".
"Police don't know cars. They heard that he drives a Lamborghini so think they are impounding it. They don't know it is an X5. Mashobane is a good man," he said.
Mbatha first made headlines when he was arrested in Johannesburg a month ago.
This was after an alleged attempted robbery in Bedfordview on July 14, in which he is said to have produced a fake police ID card before trying to rob a businessman of R30000.
He was later released on R15000 bail for this charge by the Germiston magistrate's court. He was already out on R50000 bail on nine unrelated charges in the Pretoria magistrate's court, ranging from car theft, housebreaking and possession of an illegal firearm to tax evasion.
Apart from the Lamborghini, Mbatha owns two BMWs, a VW Golf GTI, two Harley Davidson motorbikes and two luxury houses in Centurion and Hartbeespoort Dam.
