sex for services

ANGRY women at Sedibeng village outside Tzaneen in Limpopo have accused their local headman of sexual harassment.

ANGRY women at Sedibeng village outside Tzaneen in Limpopo have accused their local headman of sexual harassment.

The women said they were disturbed because the headman demanded that they have sex with him if they wanted to be assisted.

They said they were living in fear because he sometimes threatens to evict them from their homes when they turn down his sexual advances.

According to the women the headman targeted single women and those whose husbands were working far from home.

A woman who wanted to remain anonymous said she had been living in fear of being raped by the headman who had allegedly been making sexual advances to her since March this year.

The woman, whose name is known to Sowetan, said the headman had threatened to take away her two residential sites because she refused to sleep with him.

She said she had obtained the two stands about four years ago and used one to operate a spaza shop.

"We are sick and tired of the man's actions and cannot take it anymore because he should be the one from whom we seek help when we have problems," said an angry woman.

Other headmen in neighbouring villages, who had reportedly also received complaints from the women in Sedibeng, had threatened to take the matter up with the chiefs. The headman allegedly promised to beat or injure anyone who tried to expose him.

Other single women claimed the headman even went to the extent of paying them a visit and demanding to have sex with them in exchange for services in future.

Many disgruntled women in the village said the headman's action brought them fear because they might become his next victims if nothing was done about the allegations.

The headman applies a "one blanket, one service" approach to unsuspecting women who approach him to enquire about residential stands and other issues.

Approached for comment yesterday, the headman, whose name is known to Sowetan, rejected all the allegations against him.

He said he knew nothing about the allegations and that the women were just targeting him to tarnish his good image.
