A 61-YEAR-OLD woman who posed as a medical doctor and district surgeon has been arrested at her home in Prospect Road, Umzinto.
The police said the woman, who is originally from Eastern Cape, was arrested yesterday morning.
Captain Vincent Pandarum said the woman practised as a doctor from a surgery in the Umzinto Main Street.
"She also practised as a district surgeon treating inmates at the Umzinto Correctional Centre Hospital for a year before she was arrested.
"According to the records of the Health Professions Council of South Africa nobody was registered with the council with the practice number and name used by the suspect," Pandarum said.
He said the police were still investigating whether she possessed any medical qualifications and where she got her medical supplies from.
"The Umzinto Correctional Centre records allegedly reflect that an amount of R35000 had been paid to the bogus doctor for her services," Pandarum said.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Umzinto magistrates' court later this week to face a fraud charge.
Meanwhile, the "Blue light" VIP escort case in which two Pietermaritzburg police officers, Hlanganani Nxumalo and Caiphus Ndlela, are charged with six counts of culpable homicide was yesterday postponed to January 21 next year.
Nxumalo, who allegedly fired at a vehicle, which then crashed on the N3 highway near Pietermaritzburg, is also charged with the negligent discharging of a firearm.
He was a member of the VIP protection unit and a police constable when he allegedly fired the shots while he was a passenger in a vehicle allegedly rushing to pick up KwaZulu-Natal MEC Meshack Hadebe.
Ndlela is also charged with reckless and negligent driving.
The driver of the vehicle that was shot at lost control, swerved across the median and crashed into oncoming traffic, injuring six people.
