She wanted me out of the way to cash in on my estate

A LIMPOPO woman has been arrested after allegedly hiring hitmen to kill her businessman husband.

A LIMPOPO woman has been arrested after allegedly hiring hitmen to kill her businessman husband.

The woman, Doris Muthembi, and the alleged hitmen, Vincent Tlakula and Moses Ntsenene, were arrested on charges of conspiring to kill her common-law husband Godhard Mugwena so that they could cash in on his estate.

It is alleged that Mugwena had been receiving death threats from anonymous callers.

Mugwena owns several businesses in Thohoyandou, including a medical training school and a private combined school.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo said the suspects were arrested last Wednesday at Muthembi's house, where Mugwena claimed to have been called by his wife to solve their marital problems.

The couple had reportedly been constantly fighting after allegations that Mugwena was cheating on his wife. After the fallout Muthe-mbi took Mugwena to court when he froze her accounts. The Thohoyandou high court ordered him to review his decision.

It is alleged that the three planned to kill him during the meeting to solve their marital problems. The planned murder was not carried out because the police had swiftly moved into the house.

Malelo said the suspects were found in possession of a slasher and a toy gun and hiding at Muthembi's house.

"We had followed him to the house after we learnt that there was a conspiracy to kill him," Malelo said yesterday.

The trio appeared in the Thohoyandou magistrate's court last Thursday. They are set to appear again tomorrow for a bail application.
