THE task team which has beeninvestigating the controversy around the proposed moving of Durban's Early Morning Market from the site it has been based at for almost 100 years has finally concluded the investigation and a report is expected to be released this week.

The task team, which comprises MEC for economic development and tourism Michael Mabuyakhulu and community safety and liaison MEC Willis Mchunu, was appointed by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize to investigate the Warwick Junction development project and make recommendations.

The chaos about the proposed movement of the market as well as a number of informal traders of Warwick Junction to make way for the construction of a mall began when the eThekwini municipality proposed that the traders on the pavements in the area and those trading inside the Early Morning Market be moved to another site permanently.

Although the task team has concluded its investigations, the findings cannot be made public before they are presented to the cabinet on Thursday.

Provincial economic development spokesperson Bheko Madlala yesterday urged the community and the traders to calm down and to allow the two MECs to present their findings and recommendations on Thursday.

Meanwhile, unions and associations representing the Early Morning Market traders had planned a meeting, also on Thursday, to discuss a way forward on the matter.

Responding to the development that the task team has concluded its investigations and would present its findings on Thursday, Phumzile Xulu of Streetnet International, an organisation representing informal traders, said she was unable to comment until the task team had presented its findings.
