It is about time that book was thrown at the errant fans instead of just punishing the club.
That fan's behaviour, hardly a week after his club was hit with a record R500 000 fine for crowd trouble, stems from the belief held by many supporters that the club's officials and not they, will bear the brunt of their loutish behaviour.
As it is, football, like many other black-dominated institutions, suffers from the residual racism that feeds the belief that black people are inherently a chaotic and unruly lot.
The shame that the fan causes the club therefore attaches not only to the club.
The criminal-justice system needs to send a message to football hooligans. A time behind bars, not watching their favourite team, could be one way of telling the next potential thug to change their mind.
