Police gun down suspected hitman

POLICE have killed a suspected hitman at G Section, Umlazi, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Cops gunned down the 29-year-old suspect when he drew a gun on arresting officers on Friday night.

"Members of the crime intelligence unit received information that the man was hired to kill in Greytown. He drew a firearm when confronted by the police, who defended themselves by shooting him dead," said Superintendent Buhle Ngidi.

He said officers found an illegal firearm and four bullets on the man.

"He was also wanted for two murder cases in Matimatolo and two murder cases in Greytown. The police received information that he was going to be picked up by car and transported to Greytown to kill," he said.

The shootout occurred just hours after local political leaders had committed themselves to peace. Philani Mavundla of the ANC and Petros Ngubane of the IFP shook hands, signed a memorandum committing themselves to peace and stability in the presence of senior police officials and community safety MEC Willies Mchunu.

Greytown has been ravaged by political killings. At least three councillors, Ntuthuko Ngcobo, the IFP's Bernard Ntuli and the ANC's Thembinkosi Malunga, were killed between May 25 and June 25. IFP councillor Sibongiseni Shange survived an ambush.

But an IFP member and three presumed ANC supporters were also killed last month.
