France mauled by SA U-18s

THE South African under-18 national rugby team coach, Eric Sauls, was impressed by his charges' runaway 39-3 victory over France in an international friendly in Wellington at the weekend.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday, Sauls said he was encouraged by his boys who showed determination and dedication throughout the match.

"What was also encouraging was that we gave most of our squad a run and we never seemed to lose the ascendancy in the match," said Sauls.

It was an outstanding showing for the home players considering the fact that they had three days to prepare for the France game.

The win serves as a great boost for the juniors ahead of another international friendly against Namibia in George on Wednesday.

The home side dominated the scrums , controlled the ball at the breakdown and was powerful in the line-outs. Their defence was also solid .

Captain Pieter Radema, centre Wandile Mjekevu, fullback Garth April, Johannes Goosen, winger Gary Schwartz and Jean Cook ran in tries for the hosts.

Flyhalf Thomas Lalangeira scored the only three points for France.
