THE speed a minibus taxi was travelling at the time when it ran over a schoolgirl could not be determined, the Pretoria regional court was told yesterday.
Testifying for the state, Senior Superintendent Danie Poolman of the police forensic laboratory said forensic investigations had found that 16-year-old Bernadine Kruger's scooter was hit from behind but could not determine at what speed.
He said that the rear tyre of the scooter was damaged and it had scratch marks from right to left, indicating that the scooter was moving towards the left when it was rammed from behind.
He was testifying in the trial of a Pretoria taxi driver, Percival Matji, who is accused of hitting and driving over Kruger earlier this year in Garsfontein, east of Pretoria.
Poolman the taxi driver could have avoided the collision if had he moved to the right when the scooter moved to the left to make way for the taxi. - Sapa
