Bra Hugh celebrates birthday at Durbs concert

MUSICIAN and composer Hugh Masekela will celebrate his 70th birthday with a special concert in Durban next month.

Masekela will do one show at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Conference Centre Arena on Friday September 25 as part of the Mmino MusicMix Festival and the yearly Celebrate Durban events.

Joining "Bra Hugh" on stage are a seven-person choir, long-time friend Tsepo "The Village Pope" Tshola, and guest violinist Tsepo Mngoma. The show will take fans down memory lane in jazz, Afro-beat and kwaito sounds.

"We are absolutely thrilled at the prospect of performing at Durban's famous ICC. Durban audiences are intense lovers of our music, and performing for them is a great joy and privilege. Woza September 25," he said.

The recent sell-out performance at The Teatro in Montecasino, Joburg, was also part of his birthday celebrations. Masekela has played trumpet and flugelhorn with the likes of Kippie Moeketsi, Paul Simon, Fela Kuti, The Crusaders, Bob Marley and Miriam Makeba, among other world-renowned artists.

He has also played on stages across the world from the Hollywood Bowl, Brixton Academy, Carnegie Hall Royal Albert Hall and the Village Gate to Moretele Park.

The concert is a retrospective of his 50-year career with a repertoire that will include his most popular songs from his more than 40 albums, his own personal favourites and material from his newly released CD Phola.
