'I wanted women'

Western Cape premier Helen Zille had hoped to have at least three other women in her cabinet, according to papers filed in the equality court.

Western Cape premier Helen Zille had hoped to have at least three other women in her cabinet, according to papers filed in the equality court.

Zille in May appointed 10 MECs, all males, a move which raised eyebrows.

The affidavit was in response to a complaint by Tony Ehrenreich, the provincial secretary of Cosatu, who has asked the court to order Zille to dismiss her executive and appoint one that includes women.

"I extended an invitation to Thozama Bevu of Cope," she said, "but this was not taken up because Cope decided against a coalition."

The case continues. - Sapa
