Former Pirates, Birds midfielder dies

FORMER Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows midfielder Colbert "Spear" Sobopha died yesterday morning at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

FORMER Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows midfielder Colbert "Spear" Sobopha died yesterday morning at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Sobopha, who was blinded after being stabbed by robbers just after a Swallows game against Wits in 1978, had complained of headache on Sunday.

He was then taken to Bara where he later fell into a coma, family spokesperson Oupa Mkwe said.

Former Sowetan sport writer Meshack Motloung, who knew Sobopha, 53, well, described him as a "damn good player".

Funeral arrangements had not been made at the time of going to print.
