THE DA wants the KwaZulu-Natal government to come clean on the commission of inquiry into police inefficiency and ineffectiveness.

The commission was instituted in 2005 by former safety and security MEC Bheki Cele.

DA caucus leader in the provincial legislature John Steenhuisen said they had documents to prove that a lot of taxpayers' money was spent on the commission, with no tangible results or final report being released.

"The commission was proclaimed by Government Gazette in 2005 and to date no final report on its findings has been released.

"This is a ridiculous situation, especially considering the amount of public money spent, conservatively estimated at R7million," he said.

Steenhuisen said they had submitted questions to community safety liaison MEC Willies Mchunu . He said it appeared that this department was also avoiding the issue.

"We reject former MEC Bheki Cele's statement that the commission's work was satisfactorily completed and that the report was not made public because of sensitive criminal investigations," Steenhuisen said

He said it was nonsensical, especially since the commission's work was supposed to have been completed in 2006.

"Does Cele honestly expect us to believe that three full years later investigations are still going on and at a sensitive stage? "he asked.

Mchunu's spokesperson, Bheki Mncube, said the MEC had noted the DA's concerns

"The MEC is seeking relevant information from the specific directorate," Mchunu said.
