THE appointment of Mary Metcalfe as the director-general of higher education has been welcomed.
Metcalfe, pictured, was appointed last week by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.
She left Wits University last month under a cloud of controversy when staff and students protested against the appointment of the new head of the Wits School of Education, Ruksana Osman.
They alleged Metcalfe had been forced by university management to vacate the post to make way for Osman, whom students labelled a "stooge".
Metcalfe will officially vacate the post in February 2010 when Osman takes over.
Before joining Wits in 2005 Metcalfe served as Gauteng MEC for agriculture and land affairs and as deputy speaker in the legislature.
The South African Students Congress general secretary Magasela Mzobe said: "We hope she will not change her progressive views when she starts in her her new post."
Stanley Letsoko, director of Map at the Wits Business School, said: "Professor Metcalfe is a good person who is familiar with the academic world and the world outside."
