DETTOL Shona Khona is continuing the search for soccer stars through the education through sport campaign of Reckitt Benckiser, Wits University Football Club and Sowetan for the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
Speaking at the launch of the 2009 programme, Wits FC chief executive Stan Whiting said the project had grown a lot since 2005.
Now in its fourth year, the campaign is expected to touch the lives of up to 4000 boys and girls.
Players participate by buying Reckitt Benckiser's Dettol products and sending SMSes of the products' barcodes and their own contact details to 33131.
Others collect Dettol soap wrappers at 1000 participating schools. The Dettol Shona Khona Soccer Legends, comprising former professional footballers, are already visiting the first 200 schools that have collected the most wrappers to run soccer and life skills camps.
Each of the youngsters, aged between 10 and 16, hope to be chosen for 60 places that are open at the national soccer and life skills camp at the club's academy in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, in November, Whiting said.
One player from each of these schools will be selected to attend a regional camp closest to their towns or cities. They will be joined by those who will have been chosen from the SMS component of the programme. Thirty regional camps are due to be held in October.
At the national camp 12 of the best young soccer stars will be selected to travel to the prestigious Sao Paulo Futebol Academy in Brazil for a week of training.
As a further incentive the school that collects the most wrappers will also win R50000 for the upliftment of the school.
There are additional prizes of R50000 up for grabs by participating schools.
Some of the Dettol Shona Khona recruits have already started their journey towards fulfilling their wildest superstar dreams. These include talented Tyroane Sandows, who has been offered a three-year contract by the Sao Paulo Futebol Club in Sao Paulo in Brazil, at the end of which he could qualify for a place in the Sao Paulo FC academy's senior section.
Another bright Dettol Shona Khona recruit, Sifiso Mnguni, who was discovered at the very first Shona Khona training camp, has signed a three-year professional playing contract with the Platinum Stars development team.
Five other determined young boys are currently enrolled at the Safa Transnet Sports of Excellence through Shona Khona. The are: Bongani Mocksin, Kwanele Nkosi, Tumisho Morerwa, Jerry Nkwane and Godfrey Molemela.
