IT IS very funny and saddening to see Human Settlement Minister Tokyo Sexwale scurrying all over the country to see how black people live in shacks and shanty towns.
Didn't he grow up in a township? When he was fighting apartheid didn't he see the infrastructure, town planning and housing designed by the apartheid architects?
Townships were specifically designed to stunt the development and growth of black people.
What Sexwale and this government are doing is a shame and disgrace, considering what black people struggled for and what the Freedom Charter's housing code states.
They are maintaining the disastrous apartheid and colonial housing and infrastructure that will forever prevent the socio-economic development of black people living there.
When a few young black people become professionals and earn decent salaries, they move to what used to be exclusive white areas. They move their spending power with them. They don't spend their money to help develop and support the townships.
The government must devise a long-term plan (20-50 years) for housing and town planning policies and their implementation. There should be incentives for black professionals not to move to the suburbs.
Why should we be content with the hideous monstrosities called townships and the debilitating RDP houses that this government continues to build?
In Malaysia, Chinese and Indian minorities dominated the economy and indigenous Malays had poor houses, like most blacks here. Long-term planning and commitment restored pride to the indigenous Malays.
