TO CUT down my sugar intake I've started using an artificial sweetener in my tea, but a friend told me recently that these products can be bad for you, and even cause brain tumours. Is this true?
There's a lot of controversy surrounding aspartame, the main ingredient in artificial sweeteners. But a 2007 study has shown that aspartame is safe for consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener. Only people with the very rare metabolic disorder phenylketonuria should avoid it.
