I WAS in Newtown on August 9, a day that is associated with great music during this time of the year to mark Women's Day.
Not this year, and I thought it was unfair to suddenly deprive people of their musical celebrations at their favourite venue, the Mary Fitzgerald Square, where there is normally a free concert each year.
That is until it was confirmed that Gauteng will still have a musical celebration this month at Carnival City, the only difference being that you will have to dig deep into your pocket to buy tickets.
All roads will lead to Carnival City's Big Top Arena on August 27 when the City of Ekurhuleni, SABC2, Carnival City and Famous Concerts host a special Women's Day celebration concert to honour the achievements of South African women and raise funds for charity. The concert starts at 8pm.
The glamorous occasion will feature performances by some of South Africa's top female vocalists, including the legendary Letta Mbulu. Also on the bill is jazz diva Judith Sephuma, who has no less than nine prestigious awards to her name, and the very popular Nianell, a highly acclaimed vocalist.
Also performing will be the fresh, young talent Siphokazi, the Afro-soul artist who won a Sama in 2007 for her debut album, and Louise Carver, who performed at the 46664 Concert on World Aids Day last December.
Finally, Mara Louw completes a glittering female line-up.
Holding it all together is the charming and highly entertaining stand-up comedian Trevor Noah, who will MC the event.
This year marks the 53rd anniversary of one of the largest and most important protests in South Africa's history, where the country acknowledges and reflects on the status of women today, and advances their achievements.
There will also be a three-course meal to be enjoyed by purchasing a table for 10 people for only R4400.
For those who don't want to eat, tickets can be purchased from Computicket for R195.
The mayor of Ekurhuleni, Ntombi Mekgwe, has committed a generous donation from the proceeds of the event to a women's charity of her choice .
So if you are in the mood for some good music or simply a night out on the town, this Women's Celebration Charity Gala Concert is definitely the place to be to celebrate our mothers and sisters.
