Zuma is right to choose Ngcobo

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma, should be lauded for appointing Sandile Ngcobo to lead the land's highest court.

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma, should be lauded for appointing Sandile Ngcobo to lead the land's highest court.

Ngcobo's credentials are impeccable. Since his appointment to the Constitutional Court in 1999 he has championed the cause of South Africa's less fortunate.

Evidence of the positive role he played and continues to play can be traced to his judgements in this court and involving the less fortunate.

The insinuation that he was appointed by default should be rejected with the utter contempt it deserves.

He served in this court for almost 10 years and is grounded in constitutional matters.

Many of us consider him the right jurist to bring credibility to the justice system and to the tarnished image of the Constitutional Court.

Perhaps the words "Honour" and "Worship" might be appropriate to use after his appointment.

The suggestion that the incumbent deputy chief justice was overlooked smacks of sour grapes and malice.

Zuma applied his mind carefully before making the appointment and, surely, the deputy chief justice's credentials must have been assessed and weighed against those of Ngcobo, who prevailed.

South Africans must learn to accept that a chosen leader must be given space and time to lead. and that includes choosing the best cadres to help him lead South Africa to prosperity.

The president made the right choice.
